Cutdown weekend trims every AFC East roster to 53, and most of the coverage stops at the names. We keep a different ledger. Every player who walked out the door this week has a penalty record, and some of those records explain more than the transaction wire does.
Buffalo
Nineteen players out, and the flag ledger barely notices. The most penalized departure is Dante Pettis, waived with two flags from last season, false start at the top. Mecole Hardman Jr. leaves with one flag in two years. Buffalo also waived punter Mitch Wishnowsky, whose lone recent penalty was an unnecessary roughness call in 2023, which is a strange sentence to write about a punter.
The trade matters more than any cut: center Sedrick Van Pran-Granger goes to Indianapolis. Centers touch every snap count and every silent cadence. When the Bills’ false start rate moves this season, remember which direction the interior depth went.
Miami
Twenty-two players out, and this is the division’s real flag story. Jamaree Salyer takes six penalties from last season with him, offensive holding leading the list, 51 yards in all. Over three seasons he was flagged eleven times. Running back Donovan Edwards leaves with seven flags across three years, an unusual count for the position; backs mostly get flagged when they block, and his sheet says holding.
The front office was busy in both directions. Tutu Atwell traded to the Rams, Quinn Ewers to Jacksonville, with Jarquez Hunter and Kyle McCord arriving. Miami also claimed Ryan Miller, who brings exactly one holding flag from each of the last two seasons. A wide receiver who holds once a year is not a problem. A guard who holds six times is, and he is gone.
New England
The quietest cutdown in the division, seven players, none carrying a meaningful penalty record. The interest is in the arrivals: Walter Rouse from Minnesota, a tackle with a single holding call last season, and running back Corey Kiner from Arizona. Clean sheets on the way in, clean sheets on the way out. Whatever New England’s flag profile looks like this season, it was built before this weekend.
New York Jets
Nine players out and nothing on their combined sheet worth a paragraph. The one move with a record attached is an arrival: Jordan Meredith, traded from Las Vegas, five flags over the last two seasons split between false starts and ineligible man downfield. Both are offensive line procedure fouls, the kind that show up on third and short. He is the one to watch when the Jets’ pre-snap numbers print this season.
| Player | Team | 2025 flags | Signature foul |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jamaree Salyer, OL | MIA | 6 | Offensive Holding |
| Donovan Edwards, RB | MIA | 2 | False Start |
| Dante Pettis, WR | BUF | 2 | False Start |
| Alex Austin, CB | MIA | 2 | Defensive Pass Interference |
The pattern across the division: Miami shed discipline problems, Buffalo shed depth, and the Jets and Patriots imported linemen whose sheets are worth one bookmark each. Penalty profiles for every team update in the app as the 53s settle, and the crew assignments for week one land days before kickoff.
