The AFC West had the quietest cutdown in the conference by volume. It still managed to move penalty history around in ways worth writing down, including one trade that hands the division’s most procedure-flagged lineman to its most successful franchise.
Denver
Five out, four in, the only team in the division that added more than it cut. The notable departure is safety Taylor Rapp, waived with three flags over 2023 and 2024, unnecessary roughness at the top of the list in both seasons. The four arrivals, all signings, come in with clean recent sheets. A defense sheds a roughness habit and adds bodies without records. That is what a disciplined cutdown looks like on paper.
Kansas City
Eight cuts, none carrying much, and two offensive line arrivals that carry plenty. Joshua Ezeudu comes from the Giants with eight flags over 2023 and 2024, false starts leading both seasons. Diego Pounds arrives from Baltimore alongside him. Veteran pass rusher Emmanuel Ogbah and cornerback Kaiir Elam were released.
The Ezeudu trade is the one to file. False starts travel with the player, not the scheme; the snap count changes, the twitch does not. If Kansas City’s pre-snap flag count climbs this season, this weekend is where it started.
Los Angeles Chargers
Nine out, including two veterans whose sheets end in unusual places. Safety Tony Jefferson departs with a disqualification on his 2025 line, one of only two ejections in this entire weekend’s league-wide ledger, Houston’s Kyonte Hamilton carrying the other. Linebacker Junior Colson was waived with an unnecessary roughness call from 2024. Guard Branson Taylor goes to injured reserve, designated for return, and quarterback DJ Uiagalelei was among the cuts.
Las Vegas
Seven out and one trade that exports a habit. Jordan Meredith goes to the Jets carrying five flags across the last two seasons, with false starts and ineligible man downfield at the top of his sheets. Behind him, the departures are light: Dare Ogunbowale with two holding calls from 2024, Will Putnam with one from last season. The Raiders’ cutdown subtracted more procedure flags than it kept.
